A couple decades ago Urban Naturalist Mike Houck coined the the term Greenfrastructure to describe the important role that urban green spaces play in providing climate resilience. Today people refer to green infrastructure, but in a way that term does not emphasize the importance of viewing our parks, forests, wetlands and even parking strips as critical infrastructure in the same way we view sanitation, sewage, waterworks, bridges and roads.
Next Monday on Locus Focus we talk with Mike about his concerns that Portland does not include serious adaptation strategies in the city’s climate resilience plans. We talk about the necessity of doing much more than just planting trees.
