In 1980 Oregon voters overwhelmingly passed an initiative that bans any new nuclear reactors until the there is a permanent national nuclear waste repository. Since 1992 when the Trojan Nuclear power plant in Rainier, OR closed, the state has been nuclear-free. But over the past few years a growing crop of pro-nuclear bills have been introduced during each legislative session. This year a whopping 13 pro-nuclear bills were introduced, though only only two bills (HB 2410 and HB 2038) are still moving forward.
On tnis episode of Locus Focus we talk with Kelly Campbell, Policy Director for Columbia Riverkeeper, and Emily Bowes with the Oregon Sierra Club, about how to make sure our legislators know that these bills should not pass.
