From February 3rd through March 4th, the Cascade Festival of African Films brings its annual feast of films to Portland. The festival offers a window into the richly diverse regions and countries of Africa through the eyes of African filmmakers. This week, Jan Haaken talks with Belgian-Congolese Director Nganji Mutiri about his feature film, JUWAA, which screens at the Hollywood Theatre on Friday February 17th. The film centers on a night of political violence in Congo that profoundly shapes a mother-son relationship and their efforts to understand one another a decade later. Jan talks with Ngani Mutiri about his experiences and the aesthetics that shaped this profoundly moving film. He will be at the Hollywood Theatre for a Q and A after the screening.
