Interview with John Peck on the Farm Bill, budget cuts, as well as rural politics.

Farmed Out:  The Civil War was the last time American land was directly involved...

These days we farm it out...

Fitting, is it not that as America celebrates the first shot fired in the Civil War, with military instalations littering the landscape, sprawling over farmland, sucking up the juice, once again, war trumps Soil.  Obama's budget guts environmental protection, labor protection and the defense of education - and farms of course, with the small farmers, the organic guys taking the biggest hits - while the Big Wheels of War roll on.

But look at it this way, if all those people in the military were not constantly deployed in far-flung iels of gore, streets of strife, what would they do back home?  Anyone?? Right.  No jobs, no medical care, shitty pay, maddness, poverty, addiction, death...or...General Strike.  It is highly likely that if all those people returned to find this Land is Wasteland, they would join forces with activists who have been calling for the big GS for years now.  Since the military is really the only nationally cohesive social architecture out there, it would have to be on board.  And it looks more and more like 'on board' or 'overboard.'
