Great Black Music, Ancient to Future
ADN presents a long-overdue tribute to the members of the premiere jazz group the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Famadou Don Moye, Malachi Favors Maghostus, and Lester Bowie recorded dozens of innovative and genre-bending albums, morphing everything from free jazz to Dixieland to reggae to African drumming. We have three specials this month: Monday 13th: Music of Joseph Jarman. Often overlooked as a composer, we have two full hours of his own work. Saxophones, flutes, poetry, balafons, songs.
Also: Monday 27 November, 11:00 pm -Midnight: Music of Roscoe Mitchell. Mitchell (alive and well) also composes modern “chance compositions.” We’ll hear his orchestral side for one hour.
Thursday 30 November, 8:00 pm – Midnight: Art Ensemble of Chicago special, four hours of forty years of their best and finest music (we’re going “deep catalog” on this one).
