In this extended (and unexpurgated) conversation with cartoonist Roz Chast, we spend an extra 15 minutes with the bestselling author who inspired The New Yorker’s David Remnick to say: “She’s got a very recognizable style of squiggly lines and neurotic characters.”
Roz's work has appeared in The Village Voice, The National Lampoon, Scientific American, Mother Jones, and of course The New Yorker. Her books include the graphic memoirs Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, about her caregiving role for her dying parents, and I Must Be Dreaming, a tour through “dream-theory land” recounting her own dreams and exploring how philosophers, mystics, poets, and psychologists understood the significance of the dream state.
S.W. Conser sat down with Roz at the 2023 Portland Book Festival for a wide-ranging conversation about her cartooning and literary adventures.
