The Oregon legislative session began on Monday February 5th. Lawmakers have just 5 weeks to address what they hope to accomplish, and one big agenda item is Measure 1-10, Oregon’s Drug Decriminalization measure.
In 2020, voters passed the measure to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs and to redirect cannabis tax dollars towards treatment and recovery services, specifically ones that Medicaid doesn’t cover. Now, lawmakers plan to re-criminalize possession of small amounts of drugs in response to public outcry about public drug use.
On KBOO News in Depth this week, we’ve been examining the issues, both with what the data says, and how the funds from the measure are being used in the community. Today, I bring to you excerpts of those conversations – enjoy.
