On today's episode, we welcome Miriam Gershow, author of the new story collection Survival Tips, from Portland’s Propeller Books. Miriam’s debut novel The Local News was a finalist for the 2009 Oregon Book Award in fiction. Her stories have appeared in The Georgia Review, Gulf Coast and Black Warrior Review, among other journals. And she’s published her flash fiction and creative nonfiction in numerous journals and anthologies. Miriam was also awarded the very first Variant Literature Pizza Prize for her story “Lines of Communication”, which is included in the new collection.
Miriam has taught writing to first-graders, retirees, and everyone in between, and currently teaches at the University of Oregon. She was also a good friend and colleague of one of my favorite authors, and interview guests, the late Cai Emmons. And we’ll definitely talk a little about Cai, who remains an enduring presence in our lives and, I think, in the lives of all who knew her.
