Host Karen James speaks with Sarah Bieri, Staff Attorney, and Julia Yoshimoto, Senior Advisor and Director of OJRC’s Women’s Justice Project, who have released Death by a Thousand Cuts Volume 2, their ongoing report series on conditions at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility (CCCF), Oregon’s only women’s prison. The initial reports released in 2023 outlined the longstanding serious problems and entrenched toxic culture at CCCF and, despite months of resource spending and rhetoric from the governor and the ODOC, AICs report little to no improvements. Volume 2 continues to amplify the voices of those incarcerated and formerly incarcerated at CCCF in an attempt to educate the public and state officials about the urgent need for changes to the culture and conditions at CCCF. On May 1, 2024 OJRC called on Oregon Governor Kotek to declare a state of emergency at CCCF to immediately address the significant issues and human suffering at the prison.
