Interviews with Occupy Portland and Occupy Eugene. Plus a rant on extrajudicial execution.
The Zone occupyportland.org
The extra-judicial execution of an American citizen, Anwar Nasr al-Awlaki, for allegedly inspiring crimes allegedly committed by Nidal Malik Hasan ('the Fort Hood shooter') and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab ('the underwear bomber') has legal scholars across the world troubled and the arab world even less willing to believe in America’s insistence that it is the Honest Broker of Last Resort. Both of the above mentioned remain suspects awaiting trials in the United States. Such an action further weakens the rule of law and military restraint in Yemen. Furthermore it might add fire to combustible fuel on the ground. Americans should at least refrain from cheering.
And activists ‘Occupying’ cities across the country would do well to keep their eyes open: Look for The Shoes: The Shoes have It. Irrational exuberance is well over due but remember this: We are still breathing the noxious fumes of The Patriot Act and we all dwell in the shadow of Brandon Darby and his succubus-incubus army of informants to whom Big Money whispers blandishments. As Thomas Pynchon notes in ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’, “Paranoids are not paranoid because they are paranoid but because they are constantly putting themselves in paranoid situations.” And at this juncture, we have without a doubt gone trans-marginal.- KBOO
