As one of the confounded multitude, I'm so grateful for this conversation. It's very clear to me now that Michelle harbors no ill will towards LGBT people.
Michelle Shocked Interview
Rynosoft, or Mick Ring, you are hallucinating if you think that this "conversation" shows that Michelle "harbors no ill will towards LGBT people." She has never been successfully asked to explain why she said at the Yoshi performance that she and her prayer group friends are afraid that "preachers will be forced to marry the homosexuals" in California, as well as her claim that she is sympathetic to homosexuals because she, too, has engaged in fornication and has tried to repent for it. It comes down to this: she believes in the inerrant truths of the Bible, and thus believes that homosexual behavior is a sin in the eyes of God. While members of the LGBT community will accept her constitutionally-guaranteed right to express her beliefs in public forums, many do not feel that they should pay to support her performances when they do not believe that homosexual behavior is a sin and see that belief as a form of repressive tolerance by evangelical Christians.Michelle can proclaim all she wants about how LGBTs need to talk to evangelicals, but it's not going to change that basic disagreement. The KBOO interview made it clear that Daniel was both sympathetic to Michelle and unwilling to broach the difficult questions on this show, not wanting ever to "nail her to the wail." Instead, Daniel found "love" and "the creative artistic mind which always goes in unexpected directions" in Michelle's performance at Yoshi's, and her audience is to blame for being "confounded." Apparently Michelle gets the microphone and the absent audience, represented by twitter "gnats," gets nailed to the wall.

Consider for a moment the ethical differences between a BLACKLIST and a BOYCOTT. The BLACKLIST is a tool of repression, often implemented via anonymous oligarchs who conspire to prevent ideas, people, commodities or services from reaching the market. See HUAC and the careers sunk in academia, business, media, politics, research & science and the arts during the McCarthy Witch Hunt years of Post WW II U.S. history. Or of folksinging activist-satirist Michelle Shocked, more recently. A BOYCOTT is a tool of civil society resisting a freely marketed idea, person, commodity or service often with the goal of persuading free societies to change an unjust behavior.
Think of the Cesar Chavez Farmworker-organized boycotts of table grapes and other fruits picked for California feudal lords before the union reached a settlement to raise the workers' standard of living once the market effect was felt on down the supply chain. It took time, activist focus and much persistence around commercial mass media's resistance to running paid advertising and equal time Public Service Announcements explaining the civil society action.
Think of isolating the policies of the apartheid government of South Africa after decades of boycott in the face of Washington and the Cold War industry's, the DeBeers EU diamond cutting & distribution monopoly and Jerusalem's intimate nuclear ties with that apartheid regime. We can now lament that Arab Spring activists in exile were never able to mount any such civil society and global sympathy movement to isolate the western-backed corrupt oligopolies. We couldn't or wouldn't give up that cheap source of oil.
Ka-ching. Now Israel like Algeria's natural gas and oil fields in the Sahara are bringing in extraction engineering companies from Texas like Algeria brought in China and cheap Chinese workers, even though unemployment and under-employment of native Israelis and Algerians has destabilized those countries. Ka-ching rules, whatever the ethnicity of the feudal lord.
Here in Nike-Town within Intel-Land, LLC we all serve the Pheudal Lord Phil as do his Communist Vietnamese manufacturing contractors whose captive work force labor for pennies per day. I'd love to have seen GLOBAL BOYCOTTs of Nike & Intel as well as any multi-national off-shore cash-hoarder banking on global deflation while the value of their non-taxed idling capital gains rises. The lack of journalistic sourcing of Israelis who work with Palestinians to organize boycotts of products and profits that flow from occupied territories into global markets opens the door for accusations of anti-Jewish conspiracies and anti-Zionist attacks.
Some of Israel's most respected citizens of the generation of its founding, such as Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Generals who fought in the war of independence and led IDF troops and undercover missions such as General Mati Peled and General Yehoshaphat Harkabi worked until the end of their days advocating for a two-state solution, holding all conquered and occupied territories to be used as the Sinai Peninsula was used, namely as a bargaining chip for a peace deal.
Peace, albeit a cold one, has held between Egypt and Israel. No such bargaining chip was left in other Israeli-conquered and occupied territories which were subjected to the construction of "facts on the ground" such as Gaza's coastline, planned airport and borders with Egypt and Israel were all under de facto control by the occupier-conqueror at the time of the Oslo Agreement and the subsequent withdrawal of Israeli settlers from the "facts on the ground" that Israel constructed in Gaza.
