0521 OR Jackson County GMO
Jackson and josephine Counties in southern Oregon successfully passed ballot initiatives yesterday that will ban genetically modified crops.
The measures faced a well-funded opposition campaign that was led by agricultural giant Monsanto.
At the time of this broadcast, the Jackson County measure had passed by a large sixty-six percent majority.
Kboo’s paul Roland spoke this afternoon with Elise Higgley of Our Family Farms Coalition and a campaign director for the initiative.
Jackson county, home to Medford and Ashland, and Josephine County in southern Oregon, now join five other counties in Oregon Washington that have banned the cultivation of genetically modified crops.
The long-term safety of genetically modified crops remains unknown, since no long term studies have been performed, but critics say that we cannot afford to make a wrong decision that could impact our entire world food supply.
KBOO will continue coverage of this issue this Friday morning with Positively Revolting talk radio at eight on Saturday’s March on Monsanto in Portland, and at eleven with an hour-long special with host Paul Roland on the initiative victories and the on-going campaign against genetically modified crops and for GMO labelling in Oregon.
