There’s more ways of defining wealth than just dollars or private property. There’s the economic value of the health of families, communities and our planet – far more important indicators than those of our dominant market economy. In Portland, there’s a growing call for “caring economics” that value a more equal society where human dependence and caregiving activities are acknowledged and counted.
This week, Jo Ann and Dave talk with Reverend Frederick Woods (pictured at left) of the Mallory Avenue Community Enrichment Center about his efforts develop this kind of “real wealth” through a program that helps the recently incarcerated reenter the community as valued and productive members. Larry Collins, a former participant of Rev. Woods transition project will also be on hand to discuss his personal experiences and how he’s now helping recently released inmates. Dave and Jo An will also talk with Marcia Meyers, a grandmother, retired teacher and founder of the Real Wealth of Portland Project, about a November 14 event on the Transitions from Prison to Community program as well as other project activities.The conversation doesn't end when the program does.
