Tribute to Firefly

A Tribute to Tony Alabi (Firefly)

We are sorry to announce that Tony Alabi, host of "Africa O-Ye" (known on the air as Firefly) died on Monday, January 24, of a serious stroke. Tony had been a KBOO volunteer and programmer for over fifteen years.  In the late 1990s, we were conducting an outreach campaign in Portland to recruit new volunteers for music programs from around the world, such as Africa, Indonesia, India, Hawaii, and Korea.  Tony came to KBOO with a proposal for an African program, which started in 1998.  He also was a music promoter in Portland, and brought in many African and reggae bands, and was a participant in the Homowa African Music Festival.

Please join us for a two-hour musical tribute to Firefly on January 27th. We will not ask for any financial contributions or pledges during the show, we will just be playing some of his favorite music, and having friends and KBOO volunteers on the air to talk about their own experiences and memories.
