KBOO FALL MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM : MUSIC OF ALI FARKA TOURE
In the music of legendary Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré (1939-2006), we encounter the ancient West African roots of the blues melding with the modern world. Touré revamped the indigenous sounds of his home in the Timbuktu region of northern Mali for the electric guitar, adding influences absorbed from recordings of African-American Blues. Touré's hypnotic sound led to his nickname, the African John Lee Hooker. In this program we'll hear recordings from throughout Touré's career, including collaborations with Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Corey Harris, and Malian virtuosos Toumani Diabaté (kora) and Bassekou Kouyaté (ngoni). your host: Andy Hosch
