According to the Harm Reduction Coalition, harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.
This week on Free Culture Radio, we look at harm reduction and trace its development, from the first syringe exchanges in the 1980s to safe injection facilities and heroin maintenance treatment today. Our guest is a physician and a pioneer in the harm reduction movement, Dr. Alex Wodak. Dr. Wodak is an Emeritus Consultant with the Alcohol and Drug Service at St Vincent's Hospital; he's a Visiting Fellow for the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales; and he's the president of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation.
