Shaping a Future: Life After Prison

Carol Imani is a community college writing instructor who has also taught writing to adolescents in juvenile detention and incarcerated adults. In 2015 she led a series of writing workshops for family members of people in prison which was called With You on the Journey. The 10 family members wrote and then performed their 11 monologues to an audience at the First Unitarian Church in Portland. The project was funded by a grant from the Regional Arts and Cultural Council and also aired in segments on Prison Pipeline. Additionally, it included part of her story as a mother of someone who had been incarcerated. Carol is joining host Amy Johnson to talk about a new project, Shaping a Future: Life After Prison which, like With You on the Journey, is funded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. The Shaping a Future: Life after Prison project will allow people who have spent time in prison to tell their stories about returning to society, and the many challenges of life after prison. At this time Carol is recruiting participants for Shaping a Future. Please contact Carol directly at shapingafuture1@gmail.com if you or someone you know or work with would like to be involved in this project. Each participant will receive a $250 stipend. Carol will also be discussing her eleven year correspondence with someone imprisoned in California and his challenges in preparing for parole hearings. She can be reached at shapingafuture1@gmail.com.
