Yesterday, KBOO reported on the victory of a ballot measure in Lincoln County, Oregon, that bans the aerial spraying of pesticides and herbicides. It also establishes community environmental rights, pre-empting so-called “corporate rights,” which lead to local jurisdictions allowing harmful chemical releases despite the objection of local communities.

The measure passed after a very close election in May, winning by sixty-one votes out of about twenty thousand cast. As is the case with other close votes we could mention, both sides see a mandate in the results.

KBOO reporter Sam Bouman has more, including comments from the local group that opposes the measure (Coalition to Defeat 21-177), and Ann Kneeland with Community Rights Lane County, which aims to pass similar measures in coming elections.
