This is the first part of the hour long show in which Gender Blender hosts Rebecca Nay and Jacob Anderson-Minshall offer a tribute to Thursday’s Transgender Day Of Remembrance by addressing gender based violence.

Last month, in a period of just over one week three Washington State University students were assaulted on campus.  According to the FBI, crimes against gays and lesbians increased by six percent; but the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs says the number of victims reporting incidents of anti-LGBT violence in 2007 actually jumped twenty-four percent from the previous year.

Meanwhile, activists are reporting an increase in incidence of violence against women as the economy tanks.

What’s behind gender-based violence?  Where can victims go for help?  What can be done to stop the epidemic?

These questions and more will be answered by show’s in-studio guests are Barbara Wynne, Outreach coordinator from the Portland Women’s Crisis Line (pwcl.org) and Tash Shatz outreach coordinator of Allies Against Rape Culture.

In the second half of the show:  Joining the discussion by phone is Richard Juang Northeastern University Law School in Boston.  Richard, a genderqueer-identified Taiwanese-American, co-edited Transgender Rights and co- authored the National Center of Transgender Equality’s Responding to Hate Crimes.

In an earlier recorded interview, Rebecca and Jacob also spoke with Reid Vanderburgh—a transgender therapist and author of the Lambda Literary Award nominated Transition and Beyond, Observations On Gender Identity –about the Thursday night events in Portland, Oregon honoring the Day of Remembrance.

Portland’s Remembering Our Dead vigil is Thursday (November 20) 6:30 pm-7:30 pm at SW Park & Montgomery, featuring Reid Vanderburgh, Laura Calvo and Jenn Burleton. Stay for the FREE performance from award winning trans artist Scott Turner Schofield 8pm-9pm in the Portland State University Smith Memorial Center Ballroom 355.
