SUNDIATA: A LEGACY PASSED ON IN MUSIC

Thursday June 14 (same day as this program) -  Join KBOO and Ko-Falen (Ko-FALL-en) Cultural Center at the Clinton Street Theater for an extraordinary evening of storytelling, recounting Africa's 13th century epic tale of Sundiata Keita,  creator of the great empire of Mali.   An evening of Malian live music, storytelling, and a screening of the film "Keita: Heritage of the Griots" plus arts and crafts- all to benefit both Ko-Falen and KBOO  << complete details at: kboo.fm/community-event-calendar >>.  So it is fitting that for this edition of Africa Oyé, we delve into music of the griots, who still honor the legacy of Sundiata 700 years later.  We will hear traditional kora interpretations, modern arrangements, and collaborations with African-American jazz artists too. And joining me in studio to discuss the evening's event will be Ko-Falen founder Baba Wagué Diakité, the Portland-based artist, author, teacher and storyteller.
