Jan Zuckerman testifying with dead coral at PSCCA Tacoma LNG hearing

The push for massive fracked gas projects continues to put pressure on communities across the Pacific Northwest. Last month there was a public hearing in Tacoma, where the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency took public comments on Puget Sound Energy's proposed hybrid LNG fuel hub and storage facility at the Port of Tacoma. This week there will be a similar public hearing in Longview, Washington, for the world’s largest methanol refinery, proposed for the Port of Kalama. As in Tacoma last month, climate activists, scientists, health care professionals, educators and youth are organizing their communities to submit written comments and give public testimony expressing their concerns about why this refinery should not be built. So it's a good time to play excerpts from last month’s hearing in Tacoma, to give a sense of how to testify at the hearing in Longview this week.

This episode of Locus Focus starts with a short feature about Tacoma LNG produced for Making Contact in October. We’ll hear from Nanette Reetz, Steve Storm and Claudia Riedener, with Redefine Tacoma, Lou Paulsen and Clare Petrich with the Port of Tacoma, Tarika Powell with Sightline Institute, writer and anti-fracking activist Sandra Steingraber and Todd Hay with Advocates for a Cleaner Tacoma. Following this piece we'll hear excerpts from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency hearing on Puget Sound Energy's draft supplemental environmental impact statement for the LNG facility.

You can submit comments on the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for Kalama Methanol here. You can also provide testimony at the public hearing on December 13, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cowlitz County Event Center located at 1900 7th Avenue, Longview, WA.
