Open borders (to Jan and Mike)
It's interesting that you bring up the border within Ireland. Originally Ireland didn't have internal borders (it's an island, after all) but the British invaders brought in Scottish Protestants to help them rule over the natives. This was not an exercise in mutual cultural appreciation, it was a tool used by a rapacious empire. When the Irish fought back, the Brits were able to hang onto their northern enclave. So now there is a border (hard or soft) within Ireland that ironically is complicating Britain's exit strategy. The lesson is that borders can serve a purpose. They may not prevent a hostile invasion, but they delineate the aggression.
