Views, Reviews, and Interviews from a Socialist-Feminist, Anti-racist and Anti-colonial Perspective

Norm Diamond hosts this episode of Old Mole which includes the following segments:

How to Stop an Autocrat: Bill Resnick interviews Stephen Zunes about stopping ambitious or desperate autocrats and dictators from stealing elections. They discuss how civil resistance through non-violent but powerful and determined mass movements that disobey orders and do not permit business as usual have triumphed around the world. They also discuss that non-violence is not passivity, and that sizable marches can disable violent provocateurs. Stephen Zunes is a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco.

Count Every Vote: Bill Resnick interviews Alejandra Moreno, who coordinates the Communications Committee of Portland’s Defend Democracy Coalition, which is organizing a big, non-violent, family friendly rally and march this coming Wednesday, November 4. Portland will join hundreds of other cities around the country to demonstrate our commitment to a fair election and to start resistance to Trump’s expected effort to steal the election.

Another World is Possible: As an episode in our continuing series Another World Is Possible, Norm Diamond is  joined by Luisa Herrera for a conversation about police reform. Taking off from the police accountability measure on the PDX ballot they talk about the real social change necessary to get true police accountability, about alternative visions of public safety, and about how limited reforms can play a role in larger social transformation.

Weather: Finally, as winter looms, we have a reading by Claudia Rankine of her poem “Weather.” Rankine, a distinguished Black poet, has more in mind than meteorology when she addresses the “weather” around us.
