Feeling a little ‘green at the gills’? From “Drill, Baby Drill’ to ‘Burn, Baby Burn’ it’s just a kiss away…The ugly head of biomass keeps emerging from the technoflux’s Klimate Kwik Fix. (Motto: ‘Why change direction if there’s profit in the trainwreck?’). At first blush, the technology was touted as the Next Green Thing. But it didn’t take much research and even less reflection to conclude that biomass is a myth concocted by timber barons expressing their slash & burn, scorched earth unenlightened self-interest. Big Logging has its own version of “Leave no trace behind” in the forest. Biomass has backers in Oregon – indeed. Backers who bet heavily that wood-fired power plants will – and I quote: “spur thinning in the state's abundant national forests, create thousands of rural jobs and provide a domestic source of fuel.” The disingenuousness of that whole statement is breathtaking. Hemp of course would be a far better renewable crop than the last of our old growth forests…But that’s another story…
www.foodandwaterwatch.org is the place to go to tell the FDA 'NO'. Just want to get that up front. And now, here's why: This morning we learned that the FDA is moving at lightening speed towards Okaying transgenic fish. There is a public comment period, but the bottom line is the creature is already a reality. The salmon are on a fast track to being the first GE Animal approved for human consumption. The FDA is trying to approve GE salmon as a new “animal drug”, but the truth is U.S. Food agencies don't have a way to fully evaluate the impacts of GE salmon on human health or the environment. Worst of all, if these GE salmon are introduced into our food system, they won't be labeled, so consumers won't know what they're buying – until an allergic reaction sends them racing to the ER.
