A Mandolin Extravaganza!
On Pastures of Plenty this week (October 23, 2024) we feature 90 minutes of Mandolin music by some of the most talented players of this mainstay of stringed music.
David Grisman has played the Mandolin with nearly everybody who is anybody in Bluegrass Music. He started out in the Even Dozen Jug Band with Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian, and recorded extensively with the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. He has also ventured into Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grapelli inspired Jazz Music, which he refers to as 'Dawg Music'. He started Acoustic Disc to release and distribute his records, and has been inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame.
Ricky Skaggs has been playing the mandolin since the age of 5, and appeared on stage playing with Bill Monroe when he was 6. He later joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys when he was 16. He would also play with the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe's New South, progressive Bluegrass band Boone County with Vince Gill & Jerry Douglas, as well as Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. He would go on to have a highly successful career in Country Music, and has been inducted into the International Bluegrass and County Music Halls of Fame.
Marty Stuart also began playing the mandolin as a child, joining Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass at the age of 15. He would go on to play with Vassar Clements and Doc Watson before joining Johnny Cash's backing band. He has also had a successful Country Music career, and has been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Halls of Fame.
Chris Thile also began playing the mandolin at age 5, and helped form Nickel Creek when he was 8. In addition to recording with Nickel Creek and several solo albums, Thile is also a member of the Bluegrass band The Punch Brothers.
