The Winnemem Wintu are having a "War Dance" this Memorial Day Weekend, which is in and of itself considered an act of civil disobedience. They are asserting their rights to have an uninterrupted coming of age ceremony in an ancient site used for this ceremony on the McCloud river. The tribe is intact, traditional, distinct from other parts of society - yet not federally recognized. There is no protection for the ceremony from federal agencies like the USFS. That is why they are taking matters into their own hands. I, personally, admire them greatly and wish them success.
We talked about Inette and Iokepa of The Return Voyage. They were on their way to attend JohnTalley's memorial (Iokepa was going to offer up a Hawaiian 'Letting Go' chant) when a drunk driver hit their car. It is nothing less than a miracle that they survived the crash, although Inette is in the hospital with painful injuries. We are grateful they are still with us in this earthly 3rd dimension.
