"We can actually be a stronger additional layer in that safety net. If a child isn't going to be in school and a teacher won't notice those bruises, there are actually community organizations that still have a good likelihood that they will see that kid and be able to intervene earlier, sooner rather than later."
Last week the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to refer the Children’s Safety Levy to the November Ballot.
If passed by voters, the measure would raise over $7 million dollars each year for at least five years to support nonprofit organizations that work directly with children and youth at risk or experiencing violence, abuse and neglect.
KBOO's Claire Rischiotto spoke with Simon Fulford, the Executive Director of Parrot Creek, a local nonprofit organization that works with children, adolescents and families in need, about the measure and why funding is needed now more than ever during the pandemic.
