Civility
Holy crap, I wonder why fluoride opponents have a reputation for being insane. Just about every caller on today's show with Denis Theriault resorted to name calling and hysterics; I thought I was reading a Common Dreams comment thread. I identify with being a liberal, but people like this make it really hard to be proud of the title.
Tinfoil hats, tinfoil hats everywhere.
Christ on a bike, these people need to get a grip.Nice job to Joe and Denis for keeping it cool and attempting to bring forth an actual dialogue.
chemophobia and ignorance
I'm fine with people being against putting fluoride in the water. What I'm not fine with.. and what is pissing off most people who actually understand some chemistry, is all the completely false statements the anti people are using. For instance:- Chemicals are all bad for you. No. You are an idiot. Your whole body is made of chemicals. Natural source or not does not correlate with safety (e.g. lead, uranium, water)- Fluoride is a poison regardless of dose. Wrong. Almost every substance is lethal at the right dose. Even water has an LD50 (amount which is lethal to 50% of population). You ever eat vinegar? Potassium? Those are some NASTY POISONS!!! They will burn you with fire, strip your flesh off their bones in an hour flat!- There is some conspiracy theory and corporate funding that really profits from fluoridization. Bollocks. Preventative nutrition is always cheaper (and less profitible) than expensive treatment such as fillings, novocaine, etc. It is greener too, despite your ignorance of what a fluorine ion is, and the basic fact in chemistry that it does not matter where a substance came from, only its current state. This may be hard to swallow for some people, but many of the modern wonders we have would simply not work without these basic laws of matter and chemistry. Microchips. GPS. These all depend on science voodoo.Really, if you are ignorant of science, please recoginze it and shut up. Or go take a chemistry class. Making decisions against public health based on lies and fear is one thing. Spreading this ignorance and being rude to people who have studied these things is.. well, just like creationists, flat earthers, and so on.
