Views, Reviews, and Interviews from a Socialist-Feminist, Anti-racist and Anti-colonial Perspective

Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music: Bill Resnick interviews Dean Hubbs, historian, musicologist and cultural critic at the University of Michigan. Her book Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music examined the progressive currents in country music. Coming from a working union family, she came to critique the prevalent portraits of working people as racist, misogynist, anti-gay, narrow minded and Trump voters, as compared to those who see themselves as tolerant and thoughtful, made of better stuff and thus deserving of privilege and rule. Bill and Dean discuss how that portrait is dead wrong, but continues to inform analyses of politics and particularly who voted for Trump. They conclude with a discussion of the 2020 election and who actually voted for Biden and Trump.

Living and Dying on the Streets: In the wake of National Homeless Person's Memorial Day, Desiree Hellegers speaks with Kaitlyn Dey and Benjamin Donlon from the Western Regional Advocacy Project (WRAP) about the impact of sweeps on people struggling to survive on the streets. Chelsea Ratzlaff talks with Raven Drake of Street Roots about C3PO (Creating Conscious Communities with People Outside), and about mutual aid, community care and combatting misinformation about both Covid-19 and houselessness.

Unleashing the Erotic: We end the year this morning where we began, with a commentary from the archive by our dear friend and comrade Clayton Morgareidge who passed away on January 30, 2020. Written in October 2018 for the Old Mole, “UNLEASHING THE EROTIC AFTER CAPITALISM” is perhaps more relevant than ever. Clayton discusses the way life in capitalist society limits our ability to take erotic pleasure in life and how a life of freedom from wage labor could make all life, including work, pleasurable.
