FATHER OF ETHIO JAZZ

Mulatu Astatke left Ethiopia to study music abroad, first in London and then in the U.S. where he became the first African student to study at Boston's Breklee College of Music. He then returned to Ethiopia and created a new hybrid blending Ethiopan modes and African sensibilities with Latin-infused jazz.  Ethio jazz was born.
